Looking right to make YOU right

By Ron Stubbs Cht

Great actors crossing a stage have learned this gem of a secret, politicians entering a room full of salivating press know this technique, well informed public speakers, teachers, virtually ANYONE in the public eye that knows THIS, uses this specific direction technique every time they can to increase their percentage points on the "likeability" scale.

Mom was right when she told you to make sure you had clean underwear on when you went out (you never know WHAT may happen), always have a second plan to fall back on in case the first one didn't work, always have an extra dime for a phone call (I'm showing my age here), AND When entering a room, it's shoulders back, head tall and make a strong entrance. All of it is excellent advice. Just exactly HOW right she was, just how excellent her advice REALLY was, she might not have known.

The excellent advice that mom forgot however is this;

When you have a choice, always enter a room from the audience's right side. This little "trick" works because the brain is wired backwards. When you look to the left you activate the right side of your brain and vice versa. And each side of the brain "sees" the world differently.

There is plenty of research that indicates that the two sides of the brain might actually... literally... be separate "personalities." This is a controversial but plausible explanation of current research in neuroscience. Let's take a look at what we KNOW about the brain hemispheres. Most of what you were taught was...wrong...here's what's really going on inside of your brain(s)!

The left side of your brain (for most people) specializes in analytic thinking like problem solving, numbers, words and language. The left side of the brain is the more "adult", analytical, critical side dealing with organized thought, logical reasoning, and rational objectives. The right side specializes in spatiality and negative emotion. According to John Ratey, M.D., "Basic emotions such as happiness and sadness are separate functions, and they represent opposite patterns of activity in the hemispheres of the brain. Increased activity in the right brain often signals depression. Increased activity in the left brain often signals, happiness, euphoria and sometimes mania." The more activity in the left brain, on average, the happier the person. All the people who have been trying to get us to become "more right brain oriented," really don't know what they are opening up!

The right side of the brain also seems to be the autobiographical storehouse. We might also generalize that the right side contains more implicit memory and the left side more explicit memory. The right side is the autobiographical side that seems to store emotions, both good and bad. This side seems to be more related to the "unconscious self" than the conscious self. If the left side were more related to explicit memory, the right side would be more related implicit memory.

So what does mean to you? It simply means that in order to make the BEST impression, you want to disconnect the left side and turn on the more positive, right side of the brain. How do you do this you ask? By making them look right to activate the left side of the brain to keep the emotional side of the brain still while you build rapport. Of course, there are gender differences. Generally speaking though, women tend to use both sides of the brain and have fewer lateral differences than do men. Still for most people, Make them LOOK RIGHT to BE RIGHT!!

Are you in class and want to make a good impression on the teacher? If the teacher's desk is in the center of the room, sit where the teacher must look right to see you.

Want that raise you always dreamed about from the boss? Make certain that your chair is placed where the boss HAS to look right to see you. Make them LOOK RIGHT to BE RIGHT!!

Now, we aren't talking anything drastic here, just a slight shift to one side. And this technique alone won't guarantee success, but, if used, it WILL add a few percentage points on your likeability scale. This may not seem like such a big deal so let's put it in perspective, shall we?

If you could increase people liking you say, 5-15 percent that may not seem like a lot. But what if I said I could increase your yearly salary 5-15 percent, now would I have your attention?

Now let's say that you are a public speaker like I am and you want to increase those little percentage points during your seminar. Set up your props, white board etc in such a way that the majority of the room looks to their right to see you. If you're speaking with someone else, make sure to "use the stage" to your advantage and offer to set up their space so the audience must look to the left to watch them present. The audience will be much more critical of them and love YOU even more. Right to right is ALWAYS right. This simple phrase is a way to remember this when dealing with people. By lining up your right side with their right, subconsciously making them shift their focus, they will be MUCH more receptive to your ideas. So….to BE right…make them LOOK RIGHT!
